Foster an Underdog

Be the Bridge Between Shelter and Home.

Ready to Make a Difference?

Open your home. Open your heart. When you foster an Underdog, you help us save the next one waiting in line. Whether you can commit for a few weeks or a few months, your involvement creates measurable impact.

Based in Poolesville, Maryland, our foster network serves Montgomery County, Loudoun County, and Fairfax County, ensuring each dog receives the right environment and support.

The Underdog Division, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All fosters are volunteers, and all supplies, training, and veterinary care are fully provided by the organization.

Foster an Underdog

  • Why Fostering Matters

Every dog deserves a safe space to heal, learn, and grow — and that starts with you. When you foster with The Underdog Division, you give dogs the chance to decompress outside of the shelter environment and begin their rehabilitation journey.

Your patience and compassion create the foundation for their recovery. Each foster home opens space for another life to be saved, and each act of kindness pushes another Underdog closer to a forever home.

  • What We Provide

You’re never alone in this mission. We supply everything needed to ensure your foster experience is positive and successful. Our team provides high-quality food, medical coverage, and all essential supplies including crates, leashes, toys, and bedding.

You’ll also receive ongoing behavioral guidance from our partner trainers at K9netic Pack, ensuring each dog benefits from structure, training, and enrichment throughout their stay. Whether your commitment lasts a few weeks or a few months, your effort changes a life forever.

  • Your Role as a Foster

Fosters are the backbone of our rescue operation. Your role is to provide care, consistency, and structure that helps a dog thrive outside of the shelter. You’ll handle day-to-day care such as feeding, walks, and crate training while helping to build confidence through socialization and basic obedience.

Regular updates, photos, and communication with our team help us track progress and find the right adoptive match. If your foster needs medical appointments or training sessions, we’ll manage the scheduling and costs — you simply provide the home and the heart.

  • Types of Fostering Opportunities

We recognize that every household has different availability and experience, so we offer flexible foster opportunities. Short-term fosters typically last one to two weeks and focus on helping dogs decompress after leaving the shelter.

Training fosters work closely with K9netic Pack trainers over a two- to six-week period to reinforce obedience and confidence in a home setting. Behavior fosters support dogs with special behavioral needs for six weeks or longer, providing a stable environment to rebuild trust.

For those who enjoy advocacy, adoption ambassadors foster dogs while helping promote them to potential adopters through meet-and-greets and outreach events.

  • Foster Benefits

Fostering is one of the most rewarding experiences imaginable.

You’ll receive full logistical support from our team, including supplies, food, and veterinary coverage, so you can focus on care and connection.

You’ll have access to expert behavioral guidance from our K9netic Pack trainers to help you navigate challenges confidently.

The commitment is flexible, the impact is permanent, and the difference you make extends far beyond one dog.

Fostering saves lives, changes perspectives, and strengthens the bond between people and dogs in our community.

  • The Foster Process

Our process is designed to be simple, transparent, and supportive from start to finish. It begins with submitting a short online foster application where you share your home environment, schedule, and experience. Our team will then contact you for a phone interview to discuss your preferences and answer any questions.

After confirming your home setup, we’ll match you with a dog whose needs align with your lifestyle.

Once placed, you’ll receive consistent communication, supplies, and training guidance to ensure a smooth and rewarding experience for both you and your foster dog.
